Maplewood Twp email notifications - late

Is it just me, or are other people receiving late email notifications from the township.  I first noticed it last week when an email arrived on Friday evening announcing the shred-it day the next morning.  Unfortunately I picked the email up too late to participate.  Today it happened again, an email arriving last night (Monday) announcing the existence of 1) River clean up day, 2) Green Day Meeting, and 3) free tree seedling give away, all of which happened last weekend.

Is there something going on that I am missing?

I noticed the late email this weekend, too. Supposed to go out at 4pm on 4/22, ended up going out at 4.22pm on 4/25.

I  tried to point out the late email with the weekend's events that arrived on the Monday after the events had ended.  Received a return message that the email address that sent out the message is not monitored.  Suggestion is to point the issue out to Bailey Barnett.  She is the one who oversees the town website.  I have found her responsive.

It is late but definitely not the first time they have communicated those events.  I think they were mentioned in their weekly update the last couple of weeks.

Hmm  Here's another one.  Yesterday morning, Sunday May 1, I'm trying to drive through the village.  But no.  There's a big celebration going on with streets closed down, people all over the streets, vendors in the street, no parking signs up, and a band playing loudly.  What was this and did I miss out on a notification that the town knew about.

Here's where we have a major disconnect in comms. the Maplewood newsletter which went out when it was supposed to on Friday night doesn't mention the Maplewood Small Wonder Marketplace taking place on Sunday because it was organized by the Maplewood Village Alliance, and not the town. The MVA has its own newsletter and website (https://maplewoodvillagenj.com/) which is excellent, BTW. As is the Springfield Avenue Partnership site (https://www.springfieldavenue.com/

But there is no coordinated central site or newsletter that lets us know what's happening in the various sections on Maplewood. MOL would be the obvious choice, but the events list here only includes what people like me add into it. So the Small Wonder Marketplace isn't on that, either. It's an issue people like me who run events and also show work in the many local art shows in the area are constantly complaining about... Every time we do something like Maplewood Art Walk and close down downtown, we encounter so many people who had no idea anything was happening, despite the amount of publicity we've tried to generate. It's incredibly frustrating, but whattayagonnado?

Frustrating yes.  I can't recall how many times the village as been shut down simalarly and I had no clue.  If the town is going to publish a weekly update, maybe they should be the one to get this information together.

And the police posting no parking signs seemingly willy nilly for these events is another pet peeve of mine.  But another time.

There are just a lot of different communication methods.  Nixle (from the police, I think) usually has the street closings, but only at the last minute.  Then there are the different groups mentioned.  Sadly, I don't think MOL is going to be that helpful as there aren't so many of us here as in the past.  It would be good for the town to figure out a way to do a consolidated calendar of events, with notations about street closings when applicable.

The SOMA Two Towns For All ages digital event calendar which comes out on the beginning of each month is a pretty good  source of all of the events about town.  I have been posting it upon receipt to MOL in the Years of the Maplewood NJ Senior (Older Adult) thread.  The May issue has not come out yet so the May 1st event was not posted there either.

If anyone wants to help out - you can always submit an event here:

It really feels like things are getting back to normal lately - submissions have been up!  Over the pandemic, I hardly had to approve many events.  Now I'm back to checking daily!
