Low Cost/Spay Neuter

On June 29 the Associated Humane Society van will be in front of Maplewood Town Hall to do low cost dog and cat spay/neutering. Call 973-824-7080 x118 or 121 to make an appointment. I want to congratulate and thank the many volunteers who have been getting dogs and particularly outdoor and feral cats spayed/neutered. Furry Hearts Rescue reported in early June that they have helped 105 cats to be spayed/neutered in 2015. This kind of effort will over the course of several years reduce the numbers of feral cats. My sense is that if you want a cat as a pet, then you should be able to welcome the cat into your home. And, of course take good care of your pet cat that will include spaying/neutering.

Do you know what the date for the next spay/neuter day will be after June 29? There are two outdoor cats in the area that were abandoned when a neighbor died but we will be unable to bring them in on that date.

The next date in Maplewood is July 27th. You may want to check the AHS calendar as they are in other nearby towns on other days. If the cats are not spayed/neutered and vaccinated, it will be a good thing to do this. Telephone 973-824-7080 x118 or 121 for a spay/neuter appointment.

Mr. Roe,

Can you post the costs involved please? That might help folks decide to call.

I pulled this off AHS Facebook page. This is what they offer with pricing:

bump. Spay/neutering is really important in reducing stray feral cats. If you are feeding stray feral cats, please take advantage of this opportunity.

I never understand why people say they can't afford the surgery but continue to feed many more mouths... Just doesn't make sense.

Bump. Spay/neuter on Monday. Call for appointment fo spay/neuter.

I left a message at the number maybe yesterday as my friend wants to bring her cat on Monday but no one called me back. Will try again tomorrow.

Call me if you can not get through.

Could someone explain the recovery procedure and time frame for cats? We have two abandoned cats that I plan to bring in July 27 and we need to know what to expect. I've done some reading online but would appreciate hearing from people with personal experience with strays.

One is male and clearly not neutered. The other is female and we suspect she has been spayed since we have never seen her in heat or with kittens since she was abandoned in December.

You'll need a place for the cats to recover - a very large cage (a litter box, food/water dishes must be able to fit with enough comfortable room to stretch out) or room in your house. Males will not require as long a time to convalesce as females. Here are pdf files I pulled off of the People For Animals site which may explain more but I'm sure Associated Humane will be happy to fill you in and will give you instructions. Depending on who may have done the spaying of the female cat, as you suspect, she can be shaved to see whether she's been "tattooed" with a green line to indicate a spay surgery (People For Animals does this when performing surgery). As long as you follow the post op directions given to you and check for signs of infection, there shouldn't be any complications. Making sure they don't eat or drink after a certain time the day before the surgery is also very important.

Here's a link to Alley Cat Allies website re: surgery and outside cats. You can call them, too.

Bump. Call AHS at 973-824-7080 x118 and x121 for a spay/neuter appointment. I want to thank AHS for the services they have provided with their van program. This may be the last AHS mobile van date in Maplewood this year. Hundreds of dogs and cats received low cost/spay/neuter, vaccinations and other well care.

Good opportunity to spay or neuter! Bump
