We like South Beach a lot. Here's the hotel we stayed - it's nice that it's off of the main drag (which can be a little loud). We aren't party people either.

If a swimmable pool is needed - this isn't your place - tiny pool. The do include a lounge chair at the beach.
Would recommend either Coral Gables or Coconut Grove -- and if you're in the mood for a splurge, the Ritz-Carlton in the latter is said to be stupendous. Don't miss Fairchild Tropical Garden!
I'm a fan of The Raleigh Hotel in South Beach - right on Collins Ave, across from the beach. http://raleighhotel.com/

Instead of exchanging gifts with our adult children, this xmas we are taking a short trip (5 days) to Miami. Having never vacationed there, I am a little overwhelmed by the number of interesting sounding neighborhoods to stay in. We are not party people, more fishing, bird watching, neighborhood exploring types....can anyone recommend an area that might be a good place to stay?
Thanks
