Looking for a romantic get-away not too far from home

We are looking for a romantic get-away as we will be away from our kids for the first time in quite a while (we're talking years).  Would like to go somewhere for a long weekend later this summer (July/Aug. timeframe) and don't want to go too far. A four hour drive from Maplewood/South Orange or a 3 hour of less flight from EWR would be great.  Total vegetation is the goal, along with good food and possible sights/concerts/art/bike riding/beach combing, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  We've never been to LI or the Maryland shore, and we've heard nice things about Sag Harbor.  I have also been to a spa in Mystic, CT and thought that it was nice.

Thanks for your help!

I don't remember where it is offhand...but the Sound of Music Family actually has a resort in the New England area...I don't know much about it.

Its a 6 hour drive..i don't know about plane time

Maryland shore could be nice but weekend traffic on i-95 is terrible.

going with the von trapp idea--you could fly via JetBlue to Burlington and stay in Stowe. There is a summer concert series in the meadow that is lovely!

Berkshires/Tanglewood

Bermuda (short flight)

Block Island

Shelter Island

Enjoy!

Montauk, Charleston, Bermuda, Bagamas.  Have fun!

You might consider the Ocean House (hotel/spa) in Watch Hill, RI or it's brand new sister hotel in Mystic, CT the Spicer Mansion.  http://www.spicermansion.com/

Agree with the Berkshires! We also had a very nice anniversary trip in the Hudson Valley, including a delicious lunch at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park.

Spring Lake, NJ - B & B.

for a first vacation away from kids in years, go somewhere where there are NO kids! Long Island or the Jersey shore or anywhere local will be packed and swarming with kids in July/August.

An AI in the Bahamas maybe? What's the budget?

If you do go to the Von Trapp Lodge...realize the movie is nothing like reality...there was no great escape...if i remember correctly, they were in the US and just stayed when the nazis took over.

Woodstock, NY or somewhere in Ulster County, NY

Thanks for all of the great recommendations.  So excited to start doing my research!

Cape Cod. Chatham, or further out.

VT sounds perfect for what you are looking for.

Pah...if you want romance, you need to go to the land of love

north fork, Long Island  absolutely beautiful!

MV, ACK (Wauwinet is adults-only for a bonus and the restaurant is killer), Rosewood Tucker's Point in Bermuda, Winvian in Litchfield, CT (you'll have to look that one up as there's no easy way to describe it), Twin Farms in VT, The Breakers in Palm Beach, Ocean House in Watch Hill.
