Any thoughts on Bagels By Jarrett?

What kind of bagels do people like?

I was tasked with bringing bagels from Sonnys to a small meeting. I asked the other two what kind they wanted. When the hostess told be "cinnamon-raisin" I really busted her chops. I said that where I come from that is not a bagel!

You asked for input and then gave someone a hard time over it? Great.

I can’t imagine StanV ever being “judge mental” about anything.

Back to the original assertion that Jarrett would give Sonnys a run for the money. No challenge to Sonnys at all, at least in our house, as they aren’t playing in the same market segment.  Jarretts is clearly a bagel sandwich place, and at our house, we do bagels as brunch spreads, not as sandwich meals, and not with meat products (much less bacon).  If you love it as a sandwich place, power to you, but it looks to me to be about as traditional a bagel place as those places specializing in blueberry and other “creative” bagels.  Still a Sonnys household!

For a big brown paper bag full of traditional bagels it’s Sonny’s all the way.

Hot Bagels Abroad is my in-town favorite for bagel sandwiches. They’re my second favorite bagels in SOMA.

I really like the Bagel Spot on Morris Ave in Union for their sandwiches but that’s a bit of a drive. If I’m driving that way for work and I have an extra few minutes I’ll stop there. They are good bagels and not stingy with the meat at all.

And lest I forget, Jackie and Son makes an outstanding breakfast Sammie which you can get on a bagel.

Baldwin Bagels in Parsippany is another excellent bagel sandwich shop.

We're lucky to have an excellent bagel place like Sonnys so close to us in South Orange. And they have flagels. No need to go anywhere else.  And Temptee is back. Plus, Shop and Stop has Acme smoked salmon and Acme is the best. Doesn't get much better than this.

I loved bagel château years ago. I remember seeing a lot of MOL bagel connoisseurs there come Saturday mornings…

This goes back many years, but If any of you remember the bagel place in Penn Station on the right-hand side near the escalator going up to Seventh Ave., we had a friend at the shore many years ago (about 50 or so) who opened it. It was one of the first bagel stores of its kind in NY. Before then you could only get bagels at a kosher bakery or in niche Jewish markets.  On the day that he had lost his job in NY he was walking through Penn Station and thought it would be a great place for a bagel shop. This was in the 70's when bagels went mainstream.

I agree with susan1014 about the difference in missions she and I both see between BXJ & Sonny's: both provide excellent products and services, but Sonny's is the tried&true "traditional" bagelry, while Jarrett took an idiosyncratic/innovative path to his own hard-earned bagelly success.

BTW: These places are both great, as was Bagel Chateau back in the day, but I never went there to buy bagels; I defined BC as one of my go-to lunch places, usually to enjoy their terrific pastrami/Swiss/Russian sammiches...

Anyhow, it's been a long time since I started this thread, and a long time since I sat in the window at BC, watching the passing parade. So I'm out. Now you can all talk about how much you miss Don's...

Better than Sonny's and about 300 feet from our front door (in Hong Kong).

https://schragels.com

I have no knowledge or experience of either Sonny's or Schragels, but within a mile or two of my front door (in Melbourne, Australia) are these two local legends - Aviv Bakery, Elsternwick and Glicks Bakery.
