Local artists to beautify Maplewood Station tunnels

Nice video by Maplewood Arts Council about plans to create murals in the tunnel again. Hope these funds can be raised!

I hope plans include eliminating the water issues that have laid waste to the numerous prior train station tunnels mural projects.

I will gladly contribute. But I agree that we need assurances that the water problems have been addressed before this moves forward.

Water will continue to seep down from the tracks above. All they can do is scrape and plaster the tunnel walls and ceiling. Any paint will eventually peel. Something to think about.

Regarding the above concerns (from the Arts Council, courtesy of The Village Green):

  • The artists will not be painting directly onto the tunnel walls; they will create their works on panels that will then be securely affixed to the walls. That way, the art won’t be as vulnerable to weather, leaks, etc.

The Council says there are two weeks left in the fund-raising drive. Looks like it’s three-quarters of the way to $10,000.

Will the panels be treated to be weather/water resistant?  Remember what happened to the murals in town hall when the roof sprung a leak.

I don’t know. Personally, if this is the kind of $10,000 project that needs to be redone every 10 years or so, or even every five with fresh art, I’m still willing to contribute.

same here.  I was just concerned that the art wouldn't last a year if it was painted directly on the walls.

Personally, I'm hoping Bill Figdor recreates his Yellow Submarine painting grin
