Link to Maplewood Homeowner Laws

Does anyone have a link to local laws? I tried this http://ecode360.com/MA1203 but can't find anything regarding parking my sons car, which is currently unregistered as he does not have his liscence yet, in my driveway. I was told by the township that I can not keep it in my driveway, even though it is parked all the way in the back on a paved patch next to the garage.

Frankly, I don't know how they could possibly enforce that. Ask them to provide the citation (of the law, not a physical one).

How long is it going to sit there for? A few weeks? Months? Years?

If it will be there for a reasonable amount of time (as in his test is in two weeks) then I'd say throw a car cover over it and if anyone asks it is a "classic" and you are just trying to keep the paint from being damaged by UV rays.

Thought you might have more luck with the state laws, so here was a quick lookup.

http://www.njlaws.com/39-3-4Unregisteredvehicles.htm

Seems to say it can't be on the road, parked or driven (as we know).

Can be in storage or a garage.

I don't see where it addresses being parked on a private driveway... and it's too lawyeresque for me to try to interpret.

It's been there for 6-7 months, and since I commute back and forth to work via public transportation my car is usually parked in front. You would have to walk all the way into my driveway to see the vehicle. The inspector said I would get something in the mail but didn't say what. As I was not home at the time of the incident this is all second hand information.

ETA My son should have his license by new years.

I can't cite the zoning ordinance at this time, but I did run across something a few weeks ago that prohibits within Maplewood the storage/parking of non-registered vehicles except in an enclosed garage.

I was contemplating buying a non-running 1947 Chevy picknup truck, which prompted my inquiry.

If it has sat there for half a year I am guessing it was one of your neighbors who made the complaint.

If you don't have a garage then I recommend putting it in your name and registering it. Once your son gets his license then transfer the title over to his name. Parent/child transfers can be done without incurring sales tax for the value of the vehicle

I had no idea I couldn't keep an unregistered car, for which a titled is issued in the my name, in my driveway. @spontaneous, (can I @ members?) the complaint should have been called on my car which is the real eyesore smile

The owner of a car does not have to be a licensed driver. Register the car, either in his name or yours. End of problem.

Laws or policies seem to be inconsistently adhered to or monitored -- IE I believe you can not park a commercial vehicle in the driveway overnight but i see several parked on a daily basis ( homeowners have commercial vehicles) - wondering how you would be cited for a regular car when commercial are not cited and much more obviuos

Some owners/drivers of commercial vehicles have applied for and received permission from the town to park their commercial vehicle in their driveway. Therefore, at least some of the commercial vehicles you are seeing may be parked legally; though, it is quite possible that others do this without receiving that permission.

Someone complained.

It's no biggie, I'll either put a plate on it or put it in the garage. Surprised at the law and more surprised that a 2003 murano in great condition, without a plate, is more offensive than a 95 Camry with rust spots on the wheel wells. tongue rolleye

I agree that one of your neighbors complained.

I lived next door to a driveway full of cars -- one of which never moved in 8 years (and had a window broken which allowed the feral cats to have a home) and the other that was involved in a head-on crash. You couldn't see them from the street because there were 2 other cars parked in back of them, so nothing ever happened to those people.

The sad thing is I can't find any readable link to homeowner laws to determine what other laws I may be unknowingly breaking.

This may be what you're looking for in section 302.8:

http://ecode360.com/9420406?highlight=unregistered#9420406

Section 302.8 is deleted and replaced with:

302.8 Motor vehicles. Except as provided for in other regulations, no currently unregistered or uninspected motor vehicles shall be parked, kept or stored on any premises, and no vehicle shall, at any time, be in a state of major disassembly, disrepair or in the process of being stripped or dismantled. Exceptions: No more than one vehicle of any type is permitted to undergo a major overhaul, including body work, provided that such work is performed inside a structure or similarly enclosed area designed and approved for such purposes.

Thanks. I wonder if the township will force the inspection of the vehicle as well after the 14 day card is expired? That things going in the garage until it starts being driven in case my neighbor decides to complain that I have an uninspected vehicle on my property..
