I just bought a new photo flash which uses 4 AA alkaline batteries. Can I safely swap Li-ions for these?

As long as they are the same voltage, yes.
No. Li-ion batteries are never the same voltage as alkaline batteries, because the potential difference in the two surfaces is different.
