Kitchen Rennovation- designer or contractor?

Hi!  My husband and I will be buying a new home and want to do over the kitchen. New floors, cabinets appliances install and island and all that.  We also will need help with the little touches- we want a farmhouse feel!  it's our first home and want something reasonable, but nice.  Who do we hire?  Also, is there someone out there that will help us figure out what couches, chairs to buy to make our living into a livingroom/tv room?  New at this and want to do it right!  Thanks!

And just realized I was typing way too fast, renovation, not rennovation!!

I would start with making your look book using magazine pictures and houzz or something to save your favorite looks then there are several local designers who can translate to your home - i have used @shh (MOL) allot who has done great work for me

I used one contractor that does great work, customer service is phenomenal and  they have lots of patience with customer to make decisions

Sounds like you should start with a designer who has some architectural chops. Without a doubt, you should look at LBC Design: http://www.lbcdesign.com/. The principal is local (in SO) and great personally and professionally.

Even before that I would consider your budget, time frame, and your own interest/ability to be involved in the project. Depending on the kitchen it is quite common for a kitchen renovation in this area to cost between 50-100K. You can certainly do it for less but it will require a lot more of your time and effort which depending on your circumstances may or may not be possible/desirable.  We re-did our bathroom last year and were getting quotes in the 20-35K range.  We ended up doing it for 13K but it took 4 months and we designed it, got our own permits, selected, and purchased all of the items ourselves (except for drywall etc).  A contractor who handles everything for you is nice to have and greatly appreciated but will be expecting to be compensated for his time and extra effort.  Good luck!  Renovations are always a headache and yet are always worth it in the end!

Thanks everyone!  I think we decided to def hire a contractor for the kitchen, and we may end up wanting a wall move too in order to make the "den" larger.  Thanks for your help.  If you have suggestions on companies that are fair to use that'd be great!

Happy Thanksgiving!
