Jim was a wonderful man. A great friend to so many. A great contributor, for so many years, to music in Maplewood. I’m glad that he has a room named for him at The Parkwood Diner! I will have to BYO there and toast him. He will be missed.
He must have been an amazing and wonderful person. Maplewoodstock is an enormous gift to this community. Wish I had known him. Condolences to his many loved ones.
Jimbo is a deep loss to SOMA. A true Music Man!
He leaves a giant hole!
One of the nicest people I've ever known. Both he and his late wife Carol personified everything good about Maplewood.
From a post on Facebook:
Jim’s wake and funeral will be on Monday, February 6th at Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Avenue, South Orange, 10:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. – Family will receive visitors. 11:00 a.m. – Service - Followed by graveside burial.
I’m glad I knew Jim. I performed with him a few times, and he also taught my kid bass lessons. I knew he struggled with health, even several years ago, so I’m glad he made it this far. I will remember him fondly.
I met Jim a few times. He was always the nicest person and such a talented musician! He was omnipresent in Maplewood but in his own quiet, laidback way. He’ll be missed.
I performed under Jim's baton for many years in the Maplewood Community Band and in Swingtown.
It was my first attempt to come back as a trumpet player as an adult, and Jim's professionalism and musicianship made it a whole lot easier. Rehearsals were the high point of my week - always enjoyable.
RIP Jim. You meant a lot to me.

I am deeply saddened by Jim's passing. I served on the ArtsMaplewood Board with him for many years. After producing my first concert in the amphitheater, Jim helped with a stage in year 2 connecting me a flatbed from Harrington. Jim then started Concerts in the Park, which evolved into Maplewoodstock. We worked together on many events, and Jim was a major player in the music and arts scene. He and Carol played a big role in making Hilton a hip and thriving artist community. Jim will be dearly missed, but his legacy will always be a part of what Maplewoodstock represents.
I just wish I was in town today to say farewell.
The last text Jim sent me was a shot of the first MWS t-shirt that someone shared on FB.
Nice service - for those who missed it:

It is with heavy heart that the Maplewoodstock Committee absorbs the news of the passing of James Buchanan. He was a “Founding Father” of Maplewoodstock back in 2004 when this whole audacious dream of a festival came into being.
Our sympathies and thoughts go out to Jim’s loved ones and all those who knew, worked with, and played with Jim.
Maplewoodstock might not have existed without his founding passion, and the community is forever grateful for his contributions to the arts, entertainment, and recreation to the community.
Here is a photo courtesy of Patch Maplewood of Jim in his element, enjoying playing bass.
