I know we go through this every year, but the zeppoli with the cannoli cream is really "sfinge". The "regular" St. Joseph's zeppoli is made with yellow pastry cream/custard. Personally, I'm a sfinge kinda girl.

After the unfortunate designation of St. Patrick's day as a "beer holiday", at least we have St. Joseph as a "dessert holiday". :-D

I'm sure Sorrento's in East Hanover has them too. BTW, does any one know how the zeppoli is connected to St. Joseph?

I had no idea where Antonio's was and then I passed it on the wrong side of Springfield this afternoon. Had it not been way too close to dinner and had I not had a tired preschooler with me, I absolutely would have done a 5-minutes-out-of-my-way-u-turn to get there for some zeppoles. Sigh. I need to plan better for next year. All these treats are mocking me now.

Mmmm fried dough. Can't stop thinking about it.

Maplewood Pizzeria makes simple zeppoli (plain fried dough with lots of powdered sugar) fresh to order. Heavenly!

Why is St Joseph associated with pastries?


It became a tradition in southern Italy as a treat associated with the day. It is also during Lent where traditionally there is no feasting and the meals are meatless or with little meat. Another traditional food was a pretty simple bread with anise seed. People would set up altars to St. Joseph in their homes and give out the bread. I had an ncle that did this and like many traditions it dies out. It became tougher and tougher for him to find a bakery that made the bread. St. Joseph's Day is Father's Day in many countries including Italy, Spain and Portugal and he is the patron saint of Poland and I think Canada or Mexico.

Yes, patron saint of Poland (wear red on St. Joseph's Day) and Canada.
