I haven’t seen a link to this, so this is second hand. Maybe others know more.

Gestapo.

Gestapo.

My words would get me banned from this site. I can't express how angry I am at these thugs.

When ICE stops people like this driver, what kind of ID are they expecting them to produce. He must have had license and his social security card.

For ICE, use all the words.

You need to have a passport or other papers regarding "status." Driver's license doesn't prove citizenship. I am now carrying my passport card with me when I go out.

My sister (in another state) let me know this week that her cleaners' husband had been picked up by ICE and taken to Louisiana. I don't know his exact "status," but he isn't a violent criminal. They have a 5 year old child. This shxx is getting real.

Situation has been real for some time now.   When a similar incident with ICE detaining an as yet unidentified person in SO, the SOPD and the Mayor there got involved.  Has there been any word of similar involvement from Maplewood officials regarding this incident?

Thank you. I'm reminding my ex-husband to stay cool if he is stopped. He argued that he has his license and social but I doubted that it would amount to much. He immigrated with his family at 12 years of age so since the entire family are citizens, I feel he is overconfident. I'll mention the passport, probably needs to be updated.

Can't believe we are in a world where one might hear, "your papers please."

I did not hear about this.

If his passport has expired, he can carry a copy of his naturalization papers until he gets his updated passport.  As others have stated, carrying his passport card is probably the best option at this time..

The police can’t interfere.

Heard a sad story recently about a man killed while being transported in the cargo area of a truck — another car had crashed into the truck. Three other people, who were riding in the truck’s front seat, without seat belts, were badly injured and hospitalized.

Folks living in private homes and requiring many different services, including gardening, should be required to check out whether the services rendered are lawfully conducted — I suspect getting services cheaper is uppermost. Who is to blame? Who is complicit? Driving on NJ highways has become more and more dangerous.

How do we protect the vulnerable while protecting the unknown drivers and passengers on the roads? And, before you respond, I am fully aware of the alcohol -drug- addled drivers, incompetent drivers, who somehow passed the driver license test, and, yes, the senior and very senior folks whose skills behind the wheel have diminished over time.  Add in issues with English comprehension, and there is legitimate reason to be concerned about highway safety.

Perhaps undoable, but maybe the town requiring a license from independent labor contractors before residents hire them might encourage residents to hire workers with township oversight? If a resident takes the added risk of hiring workers, “under the table” perhaps a penalty for the homeowner might discourage the practice?

I'm not exactly sure how this relates to the OP. We were talking about people getting picked up by ICE.

I just looked this up. Wondering if the book is more accepted as I.D.

Advantages of Passport Books

Advantages of Passport Cards

  • Convenient – It fits in your wallet
  • Less expensive than passport books (passport cards cost $30; passport books cost $110)
  • Can be used for land or sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean
  • Excellent form of official identification for children or non-drivers

X decades of refusing to enforce immigration/work rules at the employer level, probably by both parties.  Made it easy to look the other way as multiple lines of business became really dependent on (exploitable) undocumented labor, instead of providing temporary (or permanent) work visas or whatever else would have actually worked.

And now, yes, perfectly harmless and responsible people being dragged away on the streets.  Hideous.  Who's next?  Where's my country?

Weep, or scream bloody murder, and to what effect?

I don't know for sure, but since it requires the same proof of ID/citizenship, I think both are fine.

Are passport cards sold separately?

This was one site I checked.

Passport Info - all your passport resources in one place
Search for:

Be sure to go straight to the government website. Some of the others aren't legit and/or charge extra fees, etc. According to this, the card is proof of citizenship.

One suggestion that I heard if you ever witness ICE arresting someone, is to yell out, “what’s your name?”  It might be helpful in offering assistance to a family or the person arrested.

Apparently, some  folks only want the opportunity to disrupt or derail a topic under discussion because that is their only talent.

Fortunately, other posters saw the real “other side of the story” and participated with helpful comments and suggestions to alert and educate their fellow posters as to unanticipated consequences of breaking the law.

For those interested, Village Green has an article in today's email regarding the ICE incident in Maplewood Village yesterday. I don't know if it is behind the paywall.    https://villagegreennj.com/police-and-fire/with-reports-of-ice-activity-in-maplewood-village-officials-provide-guidance/?source=newsletter

As none of this has anything to do with our neighbors being arrested and sent to camps by masked federales, I'll answer this one on your thread in the Politics section.

If someone puts a tent up on your property without your permission, is he your neighbor?

I'd suggest taking this over to the Pope thread and asking "who is my neighbor?"

If you're paying taxes on something you already bought and paid for, aren't you just renting?

maybe on the township, perhaps not on the domicile.
