Running for Maplewood Township Committee as Independent

Hello Everyone!

My name is Ileana Castillo, and I am preparing to run for Maplewood Township Committee as an Independent. I need your help, please!  I am currently asking for signatures to support my candidacy, which will allow me to submit my formal application.  If you wish to offer your signature and meet me, please join me at St. James Gate in Maplewood tomorrow, April 11 at 7:00pm - 10:00pm. I would love to hear your concerns, thoughts and any issues you feel our town should address.

Thank you so much and I cannot wait to meet you!
Sincerely,
Ileana ✌️

Woo hoo!!! You would make a fabulous Committee member, a breath of fresh air, young thoughtful ideas, and you have your pulse on the vibe of town and much of the crapity crap that goes on but always stay positive.  And I know you are eager to learn more to help others. Good luck and I look forward to hearing more.

Thank you sweetie for the lovely words. I really hope I can be a breath of fresh air for Maplewood. I’ve been here for quiet sometime as some of you know (my oldest is 7 years old already !!! ) and I’ve seen me around organzing and volunteering as much as I can. I really hope people give me an opportunity to show my love for Maplewood wink

Hello MOLers,

I hope to get to see some of you tonight .. even if you don’t want to sign my petition (you know you want to sign it cheese ) .. stop by and hi !! We can chit chat and catch up !! wink

Ileana,

Getting elected as an independent is virtually impossible (see Fred Profeta's first run).  You would be better off trying as a Democrat - whether you get the backing of the party or not.

Gone are the days when Mayor John Lindsey would be denied the endorsement of both major parties,

run for reelection on the Liberal Party ticket and win

Trying as a Democrat means running in the primary, where the voters are all Democrats.  Winning without the backing of the party is possible (see Mr. Lembrich in his first election, and Mr. DeLuca when he returned to the TC), but difficult.  An independent is seeking votes in the November election both from Democrats who might have supported her in the primary, as well as all from other voters.

There isn't going to be a Republican nominee this year.  When Mr. Profeta lost to Mr. Huemer, there was also a Republican candidate.  Overall, more people voted for one of the other two candidates than voted for the winner in that 3-way race.  This was best summed up at the time by Mr. Sbenois in his immortal thread title, "Huemer Wins, Marie Costs Fred the Election".

With two open seats, two Democratic candidates, and no Republican, that changes the odds for an independent.  Ms. Castillo has spotted that opportunity.

I believe filing has closed for Republican and Democratic candidates to have their name on the ballot in November.  (Someone please correct me if I am wrong.)  Not sure if this also applies to Independent candidates.  Ileana:  You may want to check with Liz just to be sure a petition would still be timely at this point.

Independent candidate petitions can be filed up to primary day in June.

I would imagine she would have looked into this very basic aspect before posting.

It can be surprising how many people appreciate a heads-up intended to help.

or an insult that someone running for office doesn’t have enough basic common sense to see when she’d have to apply by. Give the woman an ounce of credit.

the petition itself helpfully notes the filing deadline:

THIS PETITION MUST BE FILED WITH THE ESSEX COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE NO LATER THAN 4:00 P.M. ON JUNE 5 , 2018, THE 64TH DAY PRIOR TO THE ELECTION.

Anything is possible, but it is definitely a long shot.

Someone remind me as to who are the Democratic candidates.

What are your qualifications and what is your Platform?

OK, I decided to answer my own question. The Dems are Greg Lembrich and Nancy Adams, both running for re-election. In that they are incumbents with records in office I wonder what Ms. Castillo disagrees with.

She does not have to disagree with them -- just that she can be more effective.  And with an eye on the future this could be a good experience and a way to get involved in the process.

More effective in what way? She has to spell it out.

and I am sure she will.  first step is getting on the ballot.

To get on the ballot you need signatures. I do not know about anyone else but I would not sign a petition for a candidate until I knew what he/her stood for.

no left turns into parking spaces!

Lucky for her, most will sign and withhold judgement about her until it comes time to vote.   I don't know her but would say it is safe to say that anyone who is running will put together a platform, and be prepared to answer questions.

You are correct, I need signaturees so I can submit my petition and be officially a candidate for Maplewood Township committee as Independent. At this moment I want to hear the communities concerns, thoughts or any issue they wish our township should address.

Also the current TC of Maplewood is all one party and other voices are needed to represent all views and perspectives of all of Maplewood.

It would be interesting to have a diverse township wink
