Where is the best reasonably local place to get bagels, particularly whole wheat ones?

Not a fan of Bagel Chateau in Maplewood since it was sold, though I do like your circumflex, megan.

Will try to get to Sonny's tomorrow; it's been a while since I've been there and I wasn't sure if they were still operating. Maybe I'll also get some bagels at Hot Bagels Abroad and we can do our own taste test.

Hey, I had to look up what that particular mark was called. It's not my fault it has a funny name. ; - )

We really like Bagel Spot which is on Morris Avenue near the intersection of Liberty Avenue. There is also a place in Livingston in the small shopping center across from the Shoprite (blanking on the name at the moment).

Super Duper Bagels is across shop rite, behind Sweet Basils Cafe, my fav too

Yes, I think I've had Super Duper Bagel's bagels, and they're good, but Livingston is not on our normal travels for how frequently we need to replenish. Bagels are Mr. and boy jasper's daily morning sustenance.

Bagel Spot's location is also a bit of an out-of-the-way schlep in the other direction, but not as bad. I'll have Mr. jasper decide how far he's willing to travel for his breakfast bounty.

Bagels 4 U is my favorite in the area by far.

Agree about the distance of Bagel Spot. I usually make a weekly run on the weekend and then cut them in half (since the kids don't typically finish a whole one) and freeze them for the week. Not as delicious as straight out of the oven but they defrost surprisingly well!

Oh, yes, we buy them by the dozen, slice, freeze, and toast, but a dozen won't quite last a week, and it's hard to fit much more than that in our ungenerous freezer.

Where is Bagels 4 U?

We may have to mix it up a bit; perhaps do a weekend run at one of the farther places, then a mid-week supplement at one of the closer places, depending on which ones my bagel-eaters like best.

There is a Bagels 4 U on Morris Avenue in Springfield and one in Short Hills near the big Kings supermarket/across from the Springfield Shop Rite.

Sonny's has good ww and sometimes even oat bran: love 'em both!

Goldberg's is essentially the Bagel Chateau (even though they now have different owners). If you don't like the Chat, you won't like Goldberg's. I'm firmly in the Sonny's camp. Super Duper Bagel in Livingston is by far my favorite, but it's a trek and they aren't open Saturdays. Not a fan of Hot Bagels Abroad.

I recently tried a bagel from Bagels 4 U in Kenilworth. While I enjoyed it, it seemed a little softer and fluffier than what I prefer in a bagel. Sonny's bagels are denser and more chewy, so they get my vote.

Wow, I'm tempted to do a full bagel survey. Buy one whole wheat bagel from each of the recommended places, line them up, photograph them, and then taste them one by one. If I get motivated to do that, I'll report back.

I think Millburn ShopRite carries Goldbergs' bagels. I will sometimes buy the blueberry ones because my son likes those, though they frequently seem underbaked to me, and sometimes I'll get a Black Russian for me. Those two are okay, but the whole wheat ones look schvach - pale, pasty, weak.

Bagels 4 U are REAL bagels, made in the Old World style, as are Sonny's. The family that owns both establishments have been making bagels for at least 75 years. I remember the original place in Irvington on Chancellor Ave.

There are lots of fake bagels out there!

Is Bagel Chateau with a circumflex kosher and without non-kosher?

We moved here a month ago and had to do a bit of searching to find a place where we can get decent bagel-based breakfast sandwiches (egg & cheese) without going too far. We've ended up settling on Goldberg's for now.
