But does 98% count as "all or virtually all"? Let's ask the friend.

yeah well they revised that real quick when forced to break it down to which suppliers. Plus they make a big point of not divulging the manufacturer but only speak of suppliers. Just because your supplier is here doesn't mean your supplier bought US manufactured. If your supplier imports from Korea then you are still buying a Korean product ... from a US supplier.

Nissan was pressured to break down the 98% number and couldn't...

"Nissan officials could not break down the 98% figure, however, to say specifically what percentage of parts specifically came from the U.S. as opposed to suppliers in Canada or Mexico. But Krueger noted that the automaker is trying to get as many suppliers as possible to base operations in the region surrounding Nissan’s assembly plants in Smyrna, Tennessee and Canton, Mississippi."

http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2012/05/new-nissan-altima-is-an-all-american-car/

Which is once again why the automaker can not use the Made in America stamp.

Plus that was still interesting when the yen was 80 to 1 to the dollar....

at 99.36 this is not so interesting anymore.

And as you can see....it is building manufacturing plants...just not here

The maker is also investing heavily in Mexico where it currently operates two assembly plants and will spend over $1 billion to add another manufacturing complex in Aguas Calientes.

In which part of Canada is Japan located?

Maybe Cartographer Man can chime in here but neither Canada nor Mexico is in Japan, correct?

Nissan's biggest supplier is Calsonic Kansei

They have several fascilities in the US.

Farmington Hills
Michigan
Testing and Engineering Center

Smyrna
Tennessee
Assembly and Distribution Center

Lewisburg
Tennessee
Plastics and Electronics Testing

Canton
Mississippi
Assembly and Distribution Center

Note...not one manufacturing plant....nope cause they are all overseas. So yes Calsonic Kansei USA is their big big supplier which will even set up shop right inside Nissans plant BUT they don't manufacture any parts here in the US.

Where please did I say Japan? I simply said it is not an American made car.

According to the attached about 31 percent of the parts in a Nissan are of domestic manufacture. Not all that bad for a transplant.

Oh and this is a record for thread drift. lol

So go on and BS yourselves. It is what it is... trust me you will know when the Nissan is "Made in America" cause they will slap that sticker on the second they can.

You simply were wrong with your statement Just got laid off... that's all.

Ah that's because Calsonic Kansei is Japanese... duh

And Renault owns over 40% of Nissan. But France isn't in Japan either.

That they are "made" in the USA, or that they are "kinda made" in the USA.....or that none of France, Mexico and Canada is in Japan, because that one I'm almost certain about.

I don't think an Altima is a "Low end" sedan. I think it's a frugal choice.

Those terms aren't mutually exclusive.

Its fine if you don't mind driving around in japanese aluminum.

Altimas are made in the USA, Shadowhawk.

There cookie...

justgotlaidoff said:

And there....

no it isn't but there is an alliance and Nissan holds 15% of Renault ..mind you Daimler AG also joined into the Alliance a while later with a measly 3.9% and while their CEO Carlos Goshn has done a tremendous job turning a company around that once was forced into the alliance due to financial trouble make no mistake...the headquarters is in Yokohama and that's where the money goes my dear..

I just wanna see badly parked cars!!

Sorry for the LONG thread drift.. here you go..

2005.
Waltham, MA
Shaw's Parking Lot.

Made in America and Made in USA , while most would assume mean the same, technically Made in America COULD be anywhere in North or South America, no?

Rob, thanks for bringing back memories. I lived in the upstairs apartment in a two family across the street from that parking lot.

Altima don't even sound American.

No and it actually does mean the same...by law. The official term is "Made in USA"

Made in the USA
What is the standard for a product to be called Made in USA without qualification?

For a product to be called Made in USA, or claimed to be of domestic origin without qualifications or limits on the claim, the product must be "all or virtually all" made in the U.S. The term "United States," as referred to in the Enforcement Policy Statement, includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories and possessions
http://www.business.ftc.gov/documents/bus03-complying-made-usa-standard

That is all 50 states plus the district of Columbia and Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and other small islands.

You really DO have a superhero fixation, don't you? First you thought you were the avenging angel Shadowhawk protecting the rights of lazy and inconsiderate parents to be... well... lazy and inconsiderate... what's next? Is there a superhero that drives a low quality car?

If I've offended you by implying that your car was a cheap piece of japanese aluminum I'm really very sorry. Seriously. I mean, I'm sure there are some Japanese cars that are quality products - but I'm guessing that the Nissan brand is not among the top of the heap.

Maybe you can buy a "made in USA" sticker for it? Or maybe a bumper sticker that reads, "My other car is the batmobile"? grin)

I was thinking the same thing.

Amy Poehler used to scoop ice cream just down the road at Chadwicks.

And the list of notable thing about Waltham is now complete.

Wait, I think Chadwicks was technically in Lexington.

Wait, is this thread about poorly parked cars? Or extreme close-ups of fingertips?

What happened to my SUV photo? :-((
