How about streaming movie recs?

we have a great thread about TV series.  How about one for movie recs?   I’m in the middle of a the Free State of Jones, a civil war story.  Did to get great review but I’m finding it entertaining.

What cha got?

I'm throwing this out there because I found it in the "free" movie section of Fios and otherwise never heard of it.  Not sure it was even in theaters.

"Ideal Home" with Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd.  They play a gay couple that ends up having to foster a young boy.  Funny, foul mouthed, but ultimately "feel good."

“Belonging”, a British film about mid-life crisis, and the sandwich generation. Wonderful cast.

I think was mentioned elsewhere -  we really liked the latest Coen Brother movie on Netflix - The Ballad of Billy Scruggs:

I also liked one of Burt Reynolds' last movies which is on Amazon Prime - The Last Movie Star:

I loved it in spite of the fact that I thought a couple of the chapters weren't that great.  I loved the prospector story, the singing gunslinger, the wagon train one LOL, the most.

I just saw "Get Out." Then I re-watched it two more times. Very, very good. And, it broke records with its Rotten Tomatoes score, so it's not just me.

Please include the service that provides the title you recommend.

Good idea, Tom.  For any that aren't identified here, I think imdb.com often lists services where a movie can be seen.  Don't know how accurate/up-to-date.

First Reformed (Amazon) with Ethan Hawke, written and directed by Paul Schrader and Private Life (Netflix) with Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti, written and directed by Tamara Jenkins

First is bleak, somewhat Bergman-ish, so it's not going to be for everyone ... second at first looks a lot like other movies (married couple in NYC) but is smart and has some twists

The Gift.  Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Joel Edgerton on NFLX.

totally fukced up movie.

Mentioned this on another thread - Happy as Lazzaro (Netflix). Written and directed by Alice Rohrwacher.

 My favorite chapters too.

Plus a thumbs up for The Last Movie Star.

I recently saw “Searching” on an airplane and it was one of the most unique and captivating movies I’ve seen in a while.

Thanks for that apple.   It is definitely going on my list.

Three Identical Strangers.  Amazing and fascinating documentary about identical triplets separated at birth, and the dark secrets surrounding the events. In Amazon prime video I believe.

Yeah, this is a special movie. Very bizarre. Worth watching.

It looks like CNN will be airing it soon too. They've been showing ads recently.

ETA: Premieres January 27 at 9 p.m. ET on CNN

On HBO: The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling

Incredible footage put together by Judd Apatow.  Not sure if you need to be a Garry fan or not to appreciate it.  I am and i did.  grin

I wasn't the biggest fan but loved that one.

The documentary - Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened on Netflix is great!

just saw this one - great concept - well done.  It's 99 cents on amazon.

The Dawn Wall on Netflix is excellent!

Any recent favorites?  I enjoyed Eddie Murphy as Dolemite.  Also breezed through a few Dolemite movies on Prime - love the 70s soundtracks.

Saw Marriage Story with Driver and Johannsen - it was well done.   Here's a good overview:

As for documentaries - the one on Bikram Yoga is really good:

My wife and I enjoyed the Murphy Dolemite movie.  Went back and watched one of the originals.  I can't say it was so bad it was good but if you want to watch a movie that makes one of the more well known so called blaxploitation films of that era look like Citizen Kane, go for it.

Here's a list of Netflix's Romcom movies from worst to best:

https://www.insider.com/netflix-original-rom-coms-ranked-critics-2019-2

I did see Always Be My Maybe - which I thought was done well.

I am curious to try the Fonda/Redford movies "Our Souls at Night".  I don't remember hearing about this one.  But I'm not seeking romcom movies too much either.

Another netflix original that I thought was fun was Murder Mystery with Aniston and Sandler - here's how ranker has ranked their original comedy movies:

Last night I watched "6 Underground" on Netflix. I loved it. It's definitely not to everybody's taste. It's a "relentless action movie."  Hundreds if not thousands of bodies pile up. Laugh out loud funny at times, witty and extraordinarily violent. Here's the NYT review:
