* WHERE...Eastern Passaic, Hudson, Western Bergen, Western Essex, Eastern Bergen, Western Union, Eastern Essex and Eastern Union Counties.

* WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The highest index values will occur during the afternoon and early evening hours. Heat Advisories may need to be extended into Wednesday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.

Does anyone know if the towns are opening cooling centers for the next few days?

Maplewood Cooling Locations Open for Anticipated Heat Wave

In anticipation of the heat wave this week, cooling locations will be at the Maplewood Library's Main Building at 51 Baker Street and the Hilton Branch at 1688 Springfield Avenue. Each building is open from 10:00am to 6:00pm on Monday through Thursday. Please note that a mask is required inside the library buildings.

Anyone needing a cooling location after 6:00pm should call the Maplewood Police at 973-762-1234.

I always observed heat waves, just like cold spells come in the 3 to five day ranges. I won’t be surprised if this goes till Friday. It’s downright uncomfortable out there.

For what it's worth, to be officially classified by the NWS as a heat wave it has to be at least three days long, so your observation is correct

I find the heat waves typically last a day or so longer than originally forecasted (or at least it seems that way).

Power out on upper Courter.

my air conditioners are struggling to keep up.

It was so weird today - there was a wonderful breeze…but it felt like the air was coming from an oven. A breeze that brings zero relief from beastly temperatures is bizarre.

It was off on Lower Courter too.  Nixle alert gave a restoration time of 10 pm to 3 am.  It was back by 10 pm.

The NWS has upgraded the heat Advisory to an EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING for today, Wed June 30th.

There is also a slight chance of scattered severe thunderstorms this afternoon.

Forget that old its-the-humidity cliche, it's the heat AND the humidity.

And that "It's a dry heat" thing only goes so far.  100+ is hot whether dry or humid, although humid is worse!  (And once it gets that hot, the air can hold a LOT of moisture!)

Strange occurrence last night. I heard a loud boom and a huge tree limb just fell and totaled a car across the street. No wind, no rain, just excessive heat. Any reason?

weather.gov is forecasting possible severe t-storms tonight. 8-11pm.

The tree is probably ailing. The heat or sometimes the extreme cold can cause the weak branches to snap under the weight.  The tree is struggling to keep alive, last thing it needs is a prolonged heat wave.

 Yes please.

I did my share.  I rode my motorcycle to Nutley for a meeting last night and rode home in a thunderstorm.  You all can help me clean the bike today as thanks.

NWS has issued tornado warnings for the areas in red. Hopefully it fizzles before it gets to central jersey.
