gak mosquitoes swarming in compost bin

Hiya, I took the kitchen scraps out to the compost bin today (big plastic square bin on the side of the house) and blammo, there were sooo many mosquitoes inside. I don't want to poison the compost, coz it turns into good soil for the vegetable garden, but i don't want any more skeeters around. Any ideas on how to get rid of them? Cover the whole thing w/a layer of dirt maybe?

Dirt won't do much. Draining the water which collected in the compost bin during our recent storm might help. Adding drainage holes, assuming compost wouldn't drain out too might be a solution. Keeping the compost bin covered in the future to keep standing water from collecting would be a long term solution.

The problem is that the tiger mosquitoes can actually breed in damp mulch, so I would assume that compost would be quite similar.  Unlike our old fashioned mosquitoes that needed a decent amount of standing water, the tiger mosquito can breed in as little as a bottle cap.

yep, it's covered, but the cover is about a foot higher than the pile. and there's no standing water, just composting kitchen scraps and daily coffee grounds. I feel like there should be something to blast it with, or smother it with, that wouldn't prevent me from using it on the garden later...

I use this non-toxic mosquito killer in my garden-Mosquito Dunk

isn't that for ponds? there's no real liquid in the compost, except old fruits and veggies...

it can be used for ponds or wet areas.  for wetter areas either buy the busted up pieces or buy round ones and break up
