Just received this information from the DPW. Wish I had the right spot for one. The timing after school is a fantastic idea--bring your future forester to help pick up a tree after school!
Free Trees!
Free tree seedlings will be available to Maplewood residents in April as part of the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign, a program to help communities replace trees damaged or destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.
Residents will be able to pick up seedlings Wednesday, April 15, at the Memorial Park (Oakview Ave. & Valley St.) from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Seedlings, available on a first come, first served basis while supplies last, will come with instructions on how to store, care for and plant them. The guides help residents choose the right place on a property to plant a tree while keeping in mind the tree's full-grown size in the future. Residents should plant the seedlings within two days after pick-up in order to prevent the roots from drying out. The goal of the Tree Recovery Campaign is to distribute over 500,000 tree seedlings to state residents in the next five years. It is a joint effort between Maplewood Township, the New Jersey State Forestry Services Community Forestry Program, The State Forest Nursery, New Jersey Soil Conservation Districts, Sustainable Jersey and the Arbor Day Foundation. Funding comes from The Arbor Day Foundation, FedEx and BJ's Wholesale Club.
For more information please contact Public Works at 973-762-1175.
I called and there is a wide variety of tree saplings (too many to list, I didn't catch them all in any case (flowering dogwood, red oak, norway spruce, pawpaw, red maple, sour wood among them). They will have 50 saplings total, about 5 of each kind.
