Film Club at CHS

My daughter has started a Film Club at Columbia High School, which will be having an interest meeting on April 16 after school (around 3:15) in Room A137. The club's faculty sponsor is Mr. Cutrona, whose name I hope I've spelled correctly.

All CHS students are welcome, so please let yours know about this opportunity if they have an interest in the video arts and movies!

My freshman son has already "put in on his calendar"! What a great idea! Do you know if there are plans to have meetings this year or is it an interest only meeting for next year?

I believe the plan is to meet this year.

They want to leave things pretty wide open at this point in order to accommodate all interests. My daughter is thinking about options like:

-inviting local professionals to address the group about technical topics, college options, etc.
-assembling a directory of student actors interested in working in video
-providing prompts for discussions and film projects
-watching movies
-etc.

If your son has other suggestions I'm sure they'll be welcomed!

@JCSO, this is great! I can help share this on our CHS Facebook page.

One possible video app for the club is the Drone club may be making videos. It is a growing art form and we will have by the fall some very high-end drones with cameras and GPS (not for snooping in people's yards!)

I can sit down with any students interested and your faculty adviser.

Well, that was quite a success. I am told that something like 40 kids showed up and 37 signed up to participate!

That degree of enthusiasm suggests Film is a major interest at CHS.

Thanks to all who helped spread the word. The kids and their adviser seem to have lots of plans!

And Jude, your drone suggestion was met with considerable enthusiasm at Chez JCSO.

After spring break have her come by D200 and we can discuss the drone stuff. The drone club is being advised by people in a commercial drone video company -- it is their business to make high-end videos with drones and their drones are not cheap at all. We are looking at some reasonably expensive drones (at least compared to the two toys we are using now to practice flying) and they are equipped with GPS and cameras. Presumably (but I do not know for sure) different types of cameras can be attached (HD, infra-red) for specific purposes.

From what I understand building and operating the drone is really distinct from the video stuff -- like where do you fly the drone to get what effect. So a joint Film Club-Drone Club project seems to be very much workable.
