since you will have to change your plates I think yes as the EZ pass is associated with the license plates-- or maybe you just have to update your account information ?
I don't think so.
You should, however, make sure you have the right plan. I know there are a lot of specific commuter plans for NY EZ Pass.
I did but I'm not sure why. I think I got a speeding ticket in one of the turnpike EZpass lanes and they couldnt get in touch with me or something and they froze my account. This was ages ago.
I have no idea if there are any benefits associated with switching to NJ, but I still have my NY ezpass, 12 years after moving here. They recently switched out my tag via mail without an issue. Just make sure your address and plate info is correct.
I don't know if this is still the case, but when they put in the $1 per month service charge a few years ago, some of the other states did not follow suit and some people switched to other state's programs. I'm not sure what is/was involved in doing that but apparently they were able to enroll even though NJ residents.
So ... I think you may be able to keep your account and just give them the new plate number(s), but I'm sure they will tell you if that's not the case.
No, you don't have to switch. You do have to tell EZ Pass what your new license plate is.
No you don't have to change to NJ EZ Pass. I have had NY EZ pass when it first came out and still have it after my move to NJ in 1987. I don't believe I lose anything in discounts by this. I also think there's a possibility there may be more discounts by keeping the NY EZ Pass but I never bothered checking.
So the discounts on NJ roads are the same whether or not I keep my NY pass or switch to a NJ one?
Just make sure you update your account info. I've had my NY Ez-Pass since I moved here 11 years ago.
The discounts are different. The NJ EZ-Pass gives you a trivial discount on the NJ Turnpike.
The NY EZ-Pass gives you a discount on the TBTA bridges and tunnel and a significant discount on the Port Authority bridges and tunnels if you carpool or have a "green" vehicle.
I don't remember if the NJ EZ-Pass gives you the PA discounts. The NJ EZ-Pass does NOT give you a discount on TBTA bridges and tunnels.
Originally, all EZ-Passses were given equal discounts across different agencies. Then NJ decided stopped giving discounts to NY issued EZ-Passes on the NJ turnpike. NY reciprocated by stopping discounts on the TBTA for NJ EZ-Pass holders.
Here's the tolls for the Port Authority and TBTA
https://www.panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/tolls.html
http://web.mta.info/bandt/traffic/btmain.html
Note: E-ZPass rates apply only to customer tags issued by New York E-ZPass Customer Service Center (This includes: MTA Bridges and Tunnels, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, New York State Thruway Authority, the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority (Peace Bridge), and New York State Bridge Authority). Non-NY CSC customers will pay cash or Toll by Mail rates. Anyone, regardless of residency, can apply for a New York Customer Service Center-issued E-ZPass tag. Visit www.ezpassny.com for more information or call 1-800-333-TOLL (8655) to use our automated system for account inquiries and general E-ZPass® New York information.
You have to signup for the carpool plan to enable the Port Authority car pool discount. Its free and can be done online. Anytime you have three or more in your car, use a manned lane and tell the toll collector "car pool." You'll then be charged 5.75 instead of the usual 9.75 non-peak or 11.75 peak rate. The car pool does not have any hour or day restrictions.
I finally changed to the NJ EZ-Pass (from NY) after living in Maplewood for 5 years. It's totally optional, but there are differences in the discounts that you can get. Here are the plans available through each:

I did not like paying $1/month for essentially saving the state's money by using EZPass. That's when I took my business to Delaware EZPass with no monthly fee: http://www.ezpassde.com/

Which one gives the best discount for the Holland Tunnel?
I don't think there are any further discounts on the Hudson River crossings. They don't want to encourage more car commuters.
BTW, for all my fellow geriatrics, NJ EZ-Pass offers senior discounts but you need to apply for it.
Pretty much ice in the wintertime. Good only for non-peak use, not on weekends. On GSP you have to go through the cash lane anyway.
Quite limited.

I don't know. Check the website.
Since I am moving from Brooklyn, do I need to get a NJ EZ Pass? I currently have a NY pass, and will only be commuting into the city occasionally. Most of my driving will be in NJ. Are the discounts different depending on which state you live in? Thanks
