Exchange Foreign Currency In / Around Maplewood?

I have some money left over from visits to the UK and Canada over the years. Is there a bank nearby that exchanges money? I don't go into New York often and I'd prefer to do this here if such a place exists!

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Some banks will do it by appointment (and possibly AAA). However, with fees & skewed exchange rates, you are better off arranging it privately on MOL.

BtW, I still have some Norwegian kroners available if anyone is interested.

We exchanged a bunch of foreign money a year ago at Bank of America in Maplewood, but we were doing other business there at the time and I can't remember if there was a large fee or bad rate. I didn't really care, to tell the truth... I just wanted to get rid of the stuff.

American Express offices used to do this, BTW. Not sure there is one near SOMA, however.

How much foreign currency do you have? If it's less than 200$ worth or so just hang onto it for your next trip to canada or the uk

There is an Amex travel office on Northfield in west orange. A bit east of the walker rd traffic light, I think it's near the Delta gas station.

Heading to the uk in 2 weeks- if you have over 100 in pounds will gladly take them off your hands based on whatever the current exchange rate is

Maplewood BOA sent us to Summit to purchase Euros earlier this summer. That doesn't prove that they don't buy currency, but they don't keep a lot on hand apparently.

Given, the amount of travel MOL folks do, You might post the amount you have and negotiate an exchange rate somewhere between the bid/ask of the banks.

I've exchanged Canadian Dollars at the Bank of America in South Orange. If it's not a large amount, there shouldn't be too much of a problem.

The Wells Fargo in Millburn on Millburn Avenue definitely does foreign exchange for many currencies. I do not know how their rates compare but they may be OK since I go to that bank no more than once a month and every time someone is exchanging money.

Please note that Unicef will take currency of any denomination, including coins. Certain airlines (Cathay Pacific comes to mind) actually collect it as part of the landing preparation on each flight. I have seen collection stations at most international airports. If you are planning to give anyway, this might be a elegant solution for you.

My son just came home with about $40 worth of South Korean Won. Anyone interested in exchanging for US dollars before we try the bank?

Unicef collects coins on overseas flights, mostly because I don't think any institution will exchange coins, only bills.

Thank you everyone for your help! Based on these comments, I'll try Wells Fargo in Millburn first!

I can't keep them for my next trip, as I simply never, ever remember until I arrive at that country.

You don't expect us to believe there's a currency called Hriyvna, do you?

I had to look it up, but it is legit.

How do you pronounce it? Or is it one of those words we simply cannot? I was in Mongolia once, and -- embarrassingly -- could not pronounce the name of anyone I met.

I'm reviving this thread, in case there's a current update. Looking to buy pounds sterling in advance of my son studying in Great Britain (he's leaving next week). I'm happy to relieve you of yours at the current exchange rate or would love recommendations for the current best bank to go to for this.

I also never unloaded the aforementioned South Korean won (or a small amount of Chinese yuan), so I'd be happy to make either of those exchanges, if you are heading in that direction.

AAA office in Florham Park has their bank which will order what you want, and it's usually ready to pick up the next day or two. Easy peasy and the rates are reasonable.

Some Wells Fargo branches (florham park and ??) carry FX. Do NOT use your credit card to buy it or you will be charged for cash advance. If you don't have other accounts there (!), there is a fee but still it can beat 2 trips to Aaa (order/pay then pickup)

I went into Valley National and got £ and Icelandic Kronas in a few days. Most banks will do it for you if you have an acct. The £ I would have gotten the next day - the K took a day or two more.

I was able to acquire pounds at Wells Fargo in Millburn. I had to call and arrange the purchase several days in advance

Isn't it just easier for him to go to an ATM machine when he lands in the airport?

Absolutely. But as his mother, I just want him to have some cash. Just in case, I don't know, the ATM is out of order or his card doesn't work or whatever.
