do i need to replace by FIOS modem router

FIOS offered me a deal to renew my contract.  I don't remember reading anything about new equipment.  They sent another modem/router....it is the exact same one I am currently using.  if there any reason I need to switch now?  just seems like an un necessary hassle.  I have major health problems and its the last thing i want to deal with.  I can't get a straight answer from verizon.

You probably don’t have to, but if it’s the same one, and they’re not charging you more for renting it, why not keep the newer one?

We negotiated a new deal with them a few months ago and no new equipment was involved (although we were past the original contract at the time and going month to month, I guess).

I have major health problems and its the last thing i want to deal with.  I just don't have the energy to deal with setting it up, connecting all devices.......

Then just send it back in the box it came in. It should come with a return label and free shipping. Otherwise, they'll start charging you for two boxes.

but i wanted to know or sure there is no reason I need to switch out the boxes....it looks like same, same model number etc....i don't know if these things wear out or something like that...or what was their reasoning to send a new one.....

That I can't answer because it's the same model. When I downgraded from FIOS Triple Play to internet only, they sent me a new Quantum router, but I sent it back because I decided to use my own (because they would charge me $15/month rental for it). Typically, they will tell you they are sending you a new router, or put it on the order you would have received when you renegotiated the deal. If you have an Actiontec MI424WR router (the most common one they supply), note that there are a few different types of that router. If your current router is black or has a silver stripe, it has been superceded by the later rev-I router, which has a red stripe. If that's the one they sent you, then maybe that's the reason they did it. If not, then Verizon are just being stupid and all you have to do is send it back.

they told me i needed their router because I have fios TV...did they lie about that?

No. You do need a Moca compatible router, which you already have and they sent you another one.

no, they didn't lie or no I don't actually need THEIR router and could have bought my own much cheaper.  if so could you post a link to a less expensive one I could have bought outright?

Sigh. No they didn’t lie. AND no you don’t need to rent a router from them. You can buy an actiontec MI424WR Rev I from eBay, and send both back. However, your issue was that you were not feeling well and didn’t want to deal with setting up the new one they sent you, so this will not help you, as it will only add a third router to your increasingly pointless collection of the same router.

My attempt to advise you on this, and answer your questions, is obviously failing. Please call a Verizon customer service agent and ask them flat out why they sent you a new router when you already have one you’re happy with. They will know, I can only guess at their motivations.

SIGH, IF YOU WANT TO BE AN *** GO F WITH SOMEONE ELSE..I HAVE ENOUGH CRAP IN MY LIFE...when you act like an *** you discredit yourself.

AND YOUR ANSWER IS NONSENSE...EITHER THEY LIED WHEN  THEY SAID I HAD TO RENT THEIRS OR THEY DIDN'T LIE AND I DO.

IF I COULD SAVE MONEY BY SETTING UP A NEW ONE, THAT WOULD BE WORTH THE EFFORT.

MY ISSUES IS PUTTING EFFORT INTO SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY USELESS....

YOUR RIGHT YOUR ADVICE DID NOT HELP.

WHY DON'T YOU WORK FOR VERIZON, YOU HAVE THE SAME ATTITUDE>

I HAVE TRIED TALKING TO VERIZON....AND ONLY GET NONSENSE...LIKE YOU

WHAT PART OF I CAN'T GET A STRAIGHT ANSWER FROM VERIZON DID YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?

you failed to mention the important fact that the actiontec MI424WR Rev I is a VERIZON product......mostly only used for sale

Okay, I apologize for my earlier tone. Yes, the ones you can buy on eBay are used.

ridski,  Your advice was great, thanks.  So should I go and buy one and stop renting from Verizon?  I'm sick of the money I'm paying to them.

Personally, I would. I don’t need one with moca capability, as I don’t have tv through Fios, but I would recommend a used Actiontec. Make sure it’s the latest version (rev I) and make sure you can send it back if doesn’t work. It’ll save you maybe $5 a month, but it adds up.

Having said that, if you’re on quantum, that’s something I haven’t looked into before so I don’t know how easy it is to get one of those routers. You’ll save something like $15 a month if can buy one, though.

To confirm: You said you have a working Fios router and were sent another one that is exactly the same.  You asked if you need to replace the existing Fios router (that you are already being charged for) with the new Fios router they sent you.  The answer is no.  You can continue to pay Verizon for the existing router you have in place.  You can send the new router back so they don’t charge you for two.  If you want to confirm this with Verizon you can call them and say “I just renewed my contract and was sent a new router model #(new router model number).  But I already have a working Verizon router model #(existing router model number).  Do I need to replace the existing model with the new one?”  I would also confirm they are not charging you for two routers.

If you want to save money you can purchase your own router per Ridski above and send both routers back to Verizon and call them to ensure they take the rental off of your bill.  Then you do have to go through the hassle of buying and setting up a new router and sending the other two back.

Good luck.

I recommend to some people that they buy their equipment and stop renting. But given that you have medical problems and are reluctant to do setup on digital devices, I recommend you keep renting. The one you have should be fine. If it gives problems, you can point out to verizon that they never told you to install the new one. So send it back and keep using what you've been using. It's the easiest thing to do.
