We've lived in Maplewood for 23+ years and we've never eaten there. Maybe it's time to check it out.
NJ Monthly just ran a poll of a bunch of pre-selected pizza joints. So they didn't really pick it.
The Reservoir is the very best family home style Italian food in the area.
"In addition to Reservoir Restaurant, the final four were Patsy’s in Paterson, Tony D’s in Caldwell and Star Tavern in Orange."
...And Reservoir's ALWAYS been the best pie on S.O.A....
it’s pretty good pizza. If it were in the Midwest, maybe I’d understand the accolades. Here- it’s sort of middle of the road.
As mr____edible noted, what N.J. Monthly really sez is that Reservoir won a vote. No mean feat, but not exactly a critical assessment.
Reservoir is our choice for delivery. Soda’s photo is telling: The molten cheese and surfeit grease can liken the pie to a Kilauea lava field, turning slices into guesswork. The crust keeps its crisp char, though, and it’s all delicious. As long as you’ve got plenty of paper towels and aren’t too attached to triangles, you’re good.
Try the Tony Salad or Chicken Murphy or the meat balls and pasta. All great.
Pizza is really good -- as is Star Tavern and Billy deserves the accolades.
Tony salad, chicken murphy are both great.
I think they changed the pizza recipe a bit in the last few years. That said, its phenomenal pie - its unique in a way I can't put my finger on - and people come from all over for it. Yes, just remember to bring cash.
The NJ Monthly polls are fun but not really an accurate way to pick "the best" anything.
Food is subjective. I prefer Roman. I know people who love Reservoir. My dad loves Joe's. Who is right?
When's the last time there was a SOMA Slice-off?
South Orange has:
Trattoria
Bunnys
Reservoir
Pirate's Pizza
La Vera
(Who am I missing?)
Maplewood has:
Roman Gourmet
Maplewood Pizzeria
Trattoria
Arturo's I suppose but nobody goes there anymore it's too crowded
There's Dominos and Papa John's. I'll throw those in for people who like to rant about chains.
Am I forgetting any place on Springfield Ave? I know there's lots of places to eat down that way.

wasn't Tony Salad the guy sitting next to Jimmy Two Times in the restaurant scene in Goodfellas?

No. That was Vinnie the Chin.
Pizzas are like cheesesteaks. The best is open to debate, but even the worst can hit the spot.
Hoagies are another matter.
Hoagies can be a wedge issue for sure. While you definitely want to avoid any that are sub-standard, getting into an argument about them can make you feel like you've gone through the grinder.
In South Orange I left out Village Pizzeria on South Orange Avenue on the left just past Grove Park.

Or if you prevail in the argument, a hero.
I prefer NY-style pizza, which is why I think Maplewood Pizzeria is the best. La Estrada in Millburn being second. When in the mood for "fancy pizza" as I call it (or when i'm not that hungry!) I like Arturo's or Femnia (sp?) in Millburn.

NJ Monthly sez that we enjoyed the state's best pizza last night, and we concur. Reservoir was our go-to for 30 years, and it's always a pleasure! We even ran into celeb oenophile and proud papa, Hank Zona, toting vino abbondante... BTW: Bill looks GREAT these days, and his hard-working staff are happy & proud!
