Authorities are investigating a deadly crash in Newark that left one person dead after a vehicle struck a pedestrian and slammed into a storefront.

The incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. at Rose Hill Plaza, located in the 500 block of Irvington Avenue.

Preliminary information indicates that a driver lost control of a vehicle during a crash with a pickup truck while inside the parking lot then slammed into the Ivy Hill Laundromat.

There was also a report of lockdown at Clinton School and Underhill Field

How fast were they driving in the parking lot?? Sadly all they will get is a ticket, and someone lost their life just waiting on their laundry to dry. The police outpost is right there but people don’t even slow down while driving down Irvington ave. It’s crazy out there.

What a nightmare  I’m really sorry for the person who lost their life, and all of the family and friends..

The picture in the article is hard to suss out. It looks like two vehicles end up, running up on the sidewalk directly into the storefront. I can’t imagine how that ended up happening unless one of them was zipping along way too fast in the parking lot.

I read at abc news that the car was parked and nobody was in it, and the guy in the truck had been drinking in the parking lot with his buddy. The buddy was quoted, so was the woman with the car .. she had parked it and stepped inside to check on her laundry.

Just a crazy story no matter how you look at it. Also just terrible for the woman who was killed ... just sitting doing her laundry minding her own business and out of the blue, gone.

Since the driver ran away, a drunk driver charge will be more difficult to prove without a blood draw or breath test.

I was wondering why the lockdown to investigate a crash a few blocks away. The fact that the driver in question ran away explains it. They needed to search for him, and didn’t know if he’d be dangerous.

his own drinking buddy already stated that he was drunk, seems they were both drunk. Oh, he’s gonna have a lot of charges against him when they pick him up after he’s sobered up…his truck (unless it was stolen) is there at the scene of a fatality… and he runs…a breathalyzer test is the least of his concerns right now.

This is what happens when there’s no police checking the parking lot. I have seen some real characters around that shopping area. I used to be a regular at radio shack, but rarely go over there now, unless I need something from Walgreens in the middle of the night.

Did you see the video of his friend on WABC? Not the best witness on his friend's B.A. level.  Also, has his friend attended courses to identify intoxication?  I doubt he would be called as a witness.

Of more interest, he hasn't been picked up yet (as far as we know).  Is he already in another state?

The saddest thing is about the victim and the owner of the other car and the shopping center, which I believe are the owners of Ivy Hill Apartments. It's a good bet that this guy had the minimum liability and little other resources to pay for the damage he caused. I believe the state has some kind of a fund to pay for uninsured damage. I hope so.
