David Burke at Orange Lawn to close

We’re bidding a fond farewell to whimsical tennis-ball-shaped donuts and fluffy popovers. David Burke at Orange Lawn will close on Oct. 26.

Helmed by celebrated chef David Burke, the restaurant was part of the Orange Lawn Tennis Club. For a one-time $10 fee, the general public (those who aren’t members of the tennis club) could enjoy Burke’s signatures dishes at the club: clothesline bacon, lobster dumplings and salt-aged steaks among other modern, eclectic items.

That stinks. We had a couple of great meals there and the service was excellent.

That does stink. Just another casualty... 

Their pandemic grocery service was very helpful! I was initially a skeptic but found them to be a good addition to the community.

It sounds like the club made the decision and not David Burke.

"I'm a little disappointed but not heartbroken," said Burke, who partnered with the historic club — it is the second oldest tennis club in the Garden State — to open the restaurant. He said that the club decided to close it. 

“They didn't think it would be worth running with 25% percent capacity indoors," Burke said.

It seems like a strange decision to just leave the space empty.  

There must be some cost savings to the club. I don't know what the financial arrangement is between Orange Lawn and David Burke.
