David Blaine's Ascension

Just started watching this - Maplewood's Marques Brownlee interviews those involved.

I found this latest David Blaine stunt puzzling.  There was nothing really unique about it.  David's stunts are usually pretty mind blowing.

Holding onto a set of balloons for 25,000 feet and then hurtling to earth like a missile all live on the YouTubes is not unique or mind blowing?  Tell me friend, what IS unique and mind blowing?

I thought the initial floating around was pretty lame, but was impressed that he went up so high.

It was an odd stunt for Blaine - No illusion to it.

But then again - a bunch of his other tricks were endurance based.  I just thought there was a magic trick involved in those.

First of all, he wasn't holding onto the balloons.  He was attached by a harness.  I guess the "holding on" was his illusion.

Also, plenty of people have skydived from that altitude or higher.  Tom Cruise did it 100+ times while filming one of his movies.  The military uses high altitude sky diving to deliver troops and equipment.

The guy that did the Red Bull Stratos project rose to an altitude of 127,000 feet with a helium balloon and then jumped and broke the sound barrier on his descent.

The Stratos jump was pretty insane:

Perhaps the unique part about Blaine's stunt was that he had to put his parachute on at the top.

I forgot about this guy that jumped from 25,000 feet without a parachute and landed on a net.

I wonder how you practice for that?

I guess you practice with a parachute until you can hit the target without pulling it, a couple of hundred times in a row.

Still is nutso.

That net guy might be the one David Blaine said was one of his main trainers for this.
