Chutzpah coming to Maplewood

Opening a restaurant during a pandemic takes a lot of...

of...

Darn it, the word escapes me.

No more Wild Ginger?

Sorry, never mind. I don’t know.

Wild Ginger seems still open. Chikpea is closed.

The website just says "Middle Eastern Street Food."

I guess it’ll come to you when the awning goes up...

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Manhattan restaurateur and Maplewood resident Sagi Ohayon is bringing authentic Israeli street food to Maplewood Village. Located at 175 Maplewood Ave. in Maplewood, Chutzpah Kitchen will likely open its doors the first week of October, the owners said.

Rosh Hashanah is definitely the time to  launch something new.

Isn't this exactly what everyone had been craving for whenever someone asks what we should have in Maplewood? It should do gangbusters business.

The owner, Sagi Ohayon, owns Cafe Delectia in NYC. It gets good reviews in Yelp.

Shana Tova!

eta - I'm noshing on carrot sticks and Sabra hummus as I post this.

I guess Wild Ginger went out of business.

I think it's Chikpea (which shares an address with Wild Ginger) that closed. The Wild Ginger website is still active so I assume it's still open.

There are better things to guess about on social media.

Wild Ginger is still open.  Chutzpah will be in the space that was Chickpea.

What was that space before?  --- Cucina?

I remember about 20 years ago it was a Mexican restaurant run by a Vietnam vet from California named Carlos.

The Mexican place was called Carmelitas. We liked it a lot.

We also liked Carmelita's a lot ...Carlos was quite the character!. I also have a vague recollection of another Mexican restaurant called Arizona Burritos, or something along those lines, but don't know if they occupied the same space as Carmelita's.

 You are always worth plagiarizing!

Has this place opened?

No. A quick visit to their website shows they are coming soon.

All it says is "coming soon". That's what it said when this thread began over a month ago.

Great, but I'm hungry right now.

I emailed them. They are doing soft-opening tonight for online ordering and pick-up only

That's a tasty looking menu!

So at 6:00 I ordered on line. Told pick up would be ready at 7:10. Went there. They said they were backed up and would call me when order was ready. They just called and said they ran out of food! The did not expect he high demand. They are refunding $ and emailing gift card. And we are scrounging around kitchen for something for dinner.

Makes sense to save ingredients for dine-in traffic on opening week, I guess.

What a Mensch!!! oh oh oh oh

has anyone ordered from them? have they worked the kinks out?

I placed a pickup order for tonight. Will report back.
