If you are staying for a few days and want to save a little bit, consider staying in Canmore. They have a a lot of condo rentals and suite style hotel accommodations there (the kind with kitchenettes), and it's about 15 min from Banff. It worked out really well for us for a week long ski trip (we stayed at a Wyndham timeshare but there are lots of similar styled accommodations available on expedia, etc). Canmore also has a downtown with grocery stores and also some cute restaurants.
If you're willing to splurge then there are the heritage hotels of Banff Springs and Chateau Lake Louise (both now owned by Fairmont).
Fairmount Chateau Lake Louise is spectacular--and is priced accordingly ~$700/night
Our favorite spot is 20 minutes west of Lake Louise in Yoho Park with rustic cabins and gourmet restaurant with fantastic views and hikes like the one to Takakkaw Falls

Rates are not cheap (CDN 400) but exchange rate is a 25% discount
We stayed there and used as base for great day trip through Jasper National Park to the Columbia Ice Fields - one of the worlds great scenic drives
dpawaters ...Thanks. If staying in Canmore what hotels would you suggest? No kids are going this time.
There seem to be a lot choices on tripadvisor (falcon crest lodge, stoneridge mountain resort, etc) that are similar to the timeshare unit we stayed at (worldmark canmore) in terms of the amenities (heated pools, fitness centers, kitchenettes, etc). Tripadvisor also shows some B&B options too closer to "downtown canmore". I can't really recommend anything because I only know the place where we stayed (which we more or less chanced on based on the timeshare granted to us) but they all look nice
Just looking at the pictures now - seeing those mountain views makes me want to go back!
