That's really cool. However, if the journos know what it is and why it's there, I'm unsure what the mystery is.
We're not 100% sure who agreed to having a seaworthy sailing ship burnt to its bones, yet remain sailable...there's been some speculation as to who owns which boat will be used for what purpose in the film, in the on-water scenes etc.
This particular hulk is currently moored just off Wavebreak Island (a somewhat contentious spot in local politics). It's on the landward side, in slightly calmer waters than in the more open waters on the other side of the Broadwater, Wavebreak is a sand island just off the dunes a little off the rocks into the Broadwater at Labrador. It's eventually hoped that surviving Pirate Fleet will form a water-based part of Movie World, with tours and protected dives.
What's really neat is that when we don't have annoying jetskiers, motor launches etc or cyclones in the way, we get the occasional shark or pods of whales swimming past or nosing a bit closer for a look. Really completes the lost-world feel.
I should also point out the glorious weather in that photo, taken today.
It's now 8pm, I'm sitting in my living room in a sleeveless summer frock, barefoot. Some windows are wide open, it's pleasant. Meanwhile, marksierra has been freezing his butt off in Melbourne, where it's snowed in the Dandenong hills.

Yes, right now, it's 10 degrees celsius, which equates to 50 degrees fahrenheit ... and it's not even winter in these parts, yet!!
Drove past and got a lovely view in sunset this evening: the silhouette against another perfect seascape, and contrasted against modern white yachts with their sails furled. Couldn't get a pic, sorry.
And then there's this! Mr Depp is in big trouble. He shoulda known better. Australia is rabies-free, and also free of several other nasty animal diseases because we take this stuff incredibly seriously. Really really seriously. (Copihue couldn't have got away with her dogs without a genetic test here.)

Drove past this a couple of hours ago, on a perfect blue, water-like-glass sunny day... As we were about to round Land's End (driving along Marine Pde/Bayview St), D said he thought he saw another or a burnt scow just ahead.

I can promise you, this pic doesn't do it justice. I'll try to get a better one tomorrow.
