Broken Pedestrian Crossing @ SOA/Wyoming

Anyone have an idea when the County will repair the broken pedestrian crossing button on South Orange Ave and Wyoming? Impossible to cross the street unless there is a crossing guard.

I will pass this on to our county liaison right now. They may already have this service request, not sure.

While we are talking about that intersection...any thoughts on the parents walking kids to school who take a diagonal across South Orange Avenue at the intersection with Wyoming rather than use crosswalks or go down and cross at the crossing-guard attended cross-walks in front of South Mountain?

Seems like a horrible habit to teach to children, and one that may be worth trying to discourage.

They should stripe a crosswalk along the diagonal is what they should do at that intersection. It's realistic as waiting for two traffic light changes is sort of absurd when there is sufficient time to cross on the diagonal.

But it would also be appropriate (and not "absurd") to go down the street and cross at the police-attended cross walk in front of the school. It wouldn't require many more steps, and would reflect a much more appropriate way to teach young children pedestrian safety.

I don't think I've ever seen pedestrian striped diagonals on high-speed two-way suburban streets, as opposed to intersections of one-way urban streets. Seems like a really bad idea to me (but I'm not a traffic engineer)

For those children who line up on the South side of the building or in the back, it would add a decent amount of time to the "commute." I really see no reason not to stripe the diagonal there.

A sincere, non-snarky question: does the intersection have a 4-way stop? Is there any way that some directions may have cars turning (rather than heading straight) that could run through a diagonal?

Traffic light that goes all ways red when the walk signal is active.

eta: with no turn on red permitted in any direction.

Weren't the current signals and crosswalk markings put there in response to a child crossing the street at that intersection being hit by a car and suffering a serious brain injury? Considering the volume of traffic at that intersection and the number of cars making turns there, I would err on the side of child safety rather than saving a few feet in one's commute to/from the school.

I don't believe you can legally stripe the intersection diagonally. However, since the light is red in all directions, I see no problem with the diagonal crossing, which is far more efficient for everyone in Upper Wyoming who walks to school.

Agreed, it's a dangerous intersection to cross due to the speed and limited visibility up the mountain.

Sorry, just realized my comment was vague. The button was fixed is what I meant to say.

Sheena it was! That was such a quick and easy repair. Used to 311 in Brooklyn being a black hole. Can we look into that diagonal crossing
