Bridge , secondary road from Philadelphia to NYC

Built, 1798. This was a secondary road between the two cities. On the canal path in Kingston NJ.

The primary road was the Post Road (US Route 1.)

signage:

“Princeton Bridge

45 M to Phil

50 M to Ny

1798”

Gorgeous. Love that it still exists!

For me, a sad loss was that of the mile markers on Rt 1 that existed until the '60's. They were set when the U.S.P.S. was established by Ben Franklin. Postage fee was determined by the number of miles an item was carried. So mile markers were set along the Post Road so that the fee could be determined. The markers were taken down to widen Rt. 1.

Rt.1 is still named as Post Road in the Bronx. Post Road ran/runs from New Orleans to Maine.

I wonder where they are?
