Berlin

My son (25 yr. old) is heading to Berlin for 5 weeks (June to July) then to Munich.  Short weekend in Prague.  Anything he should see/do, anything to avoid/not worth it?  His older brother will be meeting him for the trip to Munich.  One challenge is they are both vegetarians, but they'll figure that out.

In Prague, tell him to avoid the main tourist spots and go to side streets.  Go party in Zizkov area of town.

Ask my sister? (Although Munich is more her speciality than Berlin). I was sick while in Prague, so I are bread and Gatorade from Tesco.

Are you still planning on gong to visit?

In Berlin - Checkpoint Charlie Museum - amazing stories of escapes.

Dachau concentration camp is right outside Munich and can be reached via public transportation.  If they have time, it is a short train trip from Munich to Salzburg - birthplace of Mozart and location of "The Sound of Music".

Hope they have a wonderful time!

I was in Berlin for a few days last year and the best thing I did was a walking tour (in English).  I can't tell you who ran the tour, just got a brochure in the hotel lobby.  But it was fascinating as I had little knowledge of the history of the city.  Plus it gave me a foundation as to where I wanted to invest more time in my short trip.

No ideas on food, I didn't have anything worth writing about (and most meals were provided by work in the hotel anyway).

Dachau Concentration Camp is a short train ride outside of Munich.  It's a pretty heavy experience but well worth it.

we used "original berlin walks" for a walking tour.  they have a group tour  for like $16 each (or 16 eur)  but the groups can get pretty big.  we opted for a private tour-but it costs a lot more.  very informative and very good guide.  it was a good 4 hours.

As far as Berlin apart from the obvious things like the Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin Wall, I'd check out the DDR Muesum and the Computerspiele Museum. And go on a boar tour and drink a Woodruff flavored Berlinerweisse.

I spent a week there as a vegetarian and I survived without issue.

My wife was there for work and I tagged along, I also wanted to go to Poland since I'm 1/2 Polish and Berlin is pretty close. I managed to sneak in a day trip to Poznan which was a 3 hour train ride. There's a nice rebuilt town square there and plenty of vegetarian pierogi. It wasn't very touristy so it was easy to just sit and relax with a beer in the square. So I'd recommend that as a Polish side-trip. (See attached pic!)

Prague is unfortunately clogged with tourists, but that's because it's very beautiful. See the obvious sites in the day, drink the obvious beers at night.

We spent 10 days in Berlin when my daughter was at school there last year. So much fun. Some thoughts:

Whether or not WWII history is your jam, the German History Museum is one of the best I've ever seen. Especially fascinating for the way they handled the rise (and fall) of the Third Reich. Really, don't miss this. https://www.dhm.de/en.html

This Turkish restaurant was friendly, fun, and a great respite from German wurst: http://www.yelp.com/biz/hasir-berlin
