When my kids got their licenses, we got them student AAA accounts. Something like $27 per year. (I'm not sure how long that is good, but the 23-year-old still has that rate.)
Buy the kid a cross wrench. That will likely solve the problem in future.

I assumed he didn't have it based on your first post. AAA is definitely the first call I make in that situation. (I don't try to change tires since the time a high school friend of mine - then a student or recent grad of the Air Firce Academy -was killed by a passing vehicle while helping another motorist change a tire along a highway in Colorado.)
My son got a flat tire in Millburn and hasn't been able to get the tire off the car to replace it with the spare. Is there a garage still open that could make a service call? I'm still in the city.
