At first, I thought Fred was opening a second location - but here's a message from Fred:
From Fred & Co.:Happy to finally share some updates that we’ve been excited about. In the next month or so we’ll be moving into a new space in town. It’s a slightly bigger, interesting old body shop with lots of character.
We’ll have a small and simple bar program that will grow at a pace that we’re able to manage.
There’s more - the restaurant and @thebreadstand will become one, under one roof. We’ll be a mostly all day place with bakery things in the morning, full lunch service in the afternoon, a little break and then dinner, with takeout throughout (at least that’s what we think will happen). Our menus will similar and gradually expand.
One more - since we’re switching it all up, we’re going to be “Artie’s” (you can always call us whatever you prefer). This was a fun opportunity for us to lighten it up a bit.
Leaving downtown is bittersweet. It’s a uniquely special place with businesses, residents, visitors, volunteers, township officials & employees who all work so hard to keep pushing it forward. Downtown was wonderful before we arrived and will continue to be a special place. Our presence in this community will be stronger than ever and can’t wait to share all of it with you.
We’ll probably have to close for a week or so between transitioning over. Thanks for your support, really.
now I’m curious as to what old body shop they’re talking about moving to…is it on Springfield Avenue?
I kind of thought this was old news. They've been fixing up the Breadstand area for a while now.

They own the gas station across from the Breadstand and the building next to it. It sounds like they are merging with the building next door.

Nope. The building next door is a pasta store. Artie's will be on Newark Way.
How do you think the move will affect their business? What is the main impetus of the change?

In Fred I trust. I think he will knock it out of the park, as he's done with every other thing he's touched.

ahh - I kept thinking they were opening up in the auto shop across the street from the breadstand since they were sharing their parking lot. I kept thinking it was too small and there wasn't any activity going on there. Look forward to the opening!

Rent in the village is too high.

If he can work his magic on Newark way I will be more than impressed, I would start a petition to have Fred receive the highest award in maplewood.

Just a reminder: what was across from the village location when they opened was a fairly decrepit 5 & 10. Also should point out that they have made Breadstand work two blocks away on the corner of Jacoby and Boyden, so they know the neighborhood.

And they will have a liquor license.
Could it be going into what used to be Young’s Auto Body? That got renamed JS Auto Restoration. It’s an interesting choice. Right near the town maintenance yard and on a street with a bunch of industrial businesses. But it’s also close to a residential neighborhood, DeHart park and a couple of new large apartment buildings.
Given that I have known people to wait two hours for a table at Arturo’s (I saw people waiting outside at 4:30 on a Thursday not long ago) I have no doubt their clientele will follow them over there.
However I wouldn’t go so far as to compare their new location on Newark Way with downtown Maplewood in the 90s.

Get ready for a large apartment building or townhouses on Newark Way.
Tycoon Realty LLC, based in Roseland, owns 4 lots in a row on the even side of the street (#14 through #34).
So, they bought the auto body shop next to where Powers electric was? That’s a large property with parking at the back.

That’s what tycoon bought.
I was asking if Arturo’s bought the auto body shop across the street.
They are going to regret this when I chain myself to the doors.
I hate everything about this move. Arturo's works because it's small, central and serendipitous. I have to save them from themselves.
I am pleased. I live in this area and walk to the Breadstand. It will be good for the area. I wish him great success. I drove past the former Youg's autobody and the facade is now white and the 3 garage bay doors now look the same as the door on the Bread Stand. They are working on the sidewalk and driveway now so I think this must be the spot.
Speculate no further about the location. 15 Newark Way, formerly Young’s Auto Body.
Gentrification of that area is going to accelerate. In another 10 years all the realtors will be calling it “Olympic Park”.
Maplewood and South Orange DPWs will merge and Maplewood will sell the current DPW yard to a developer. They’ll build a cluster of four story mixed-use buildings and create a “town square” feeling area with cool boutiques.

It’s right behind the DPW yard. Powers electric moved across the street and the old building looks freshly painted. So all those buildings from lot 14 to 34 are going to be demolished, powers is going out of business. They have stuff you won’t find at Home Depot.
This had to be in the works for sometime and only now we’re hearing about it.

That building is owned by a couple that lives in Chester. Unless Fred bought it and the records haven't updated yet.

Fred owns the gas station/auto repair place that is across the street from Breadstand.

I don't remember the 5 & 10 being there in 2004 when we first moved here and Dan & Fred took Arturo's over after that.

we don’t seem to be on the same page. I’m talking about Newark way, not where the bread stand is at Jacoby st.
The auto body shop is across the street from number 14, Newark way, the property you said was bought by tycoon, and will be replaced by apartments.

because the 5&10 was long gone. Arturo’s was a dead pizzeria that middle school kids hung out in after school. Fred and Dan worked their magic and made that corner the hottest spot in the village.
Pictures from google. Edit: The google map is from June 2022, so it could look very different from now.

See my previous comment about that building (13-15 Newark Way) being owned by a couple in Chester.
