AI for the holidays.... pitiful puns

Dec 23, 2025 at 3:07pm

I decided to hide one of each of the kid's gifts so they could do a little search-and-find as part of the holidays. I started writing a little rhyme to give the hint of where to find the gift (bottom of their closet). It wasn't as smooth a rhyme as I had hoped, so I turned to AI (CoPilot specifically), and asked it to smooth it out a bit, and provide some other ideas.

The AI gave some rhyming suggestions, then followed-up asking if I wanted a version with puns. Sure I did! Puns can be fun! Let's see them!

I have pasted the AI's versions of rhyming pun clues below. They are so terrible, I thought I would share. I'm not even sure they qualify as puns... and some rhymes are made with the same word.

Pun Option 1 — “Present” Tense

At the bottom of the closet, your gift’s doing just fine—
It’s waiting im‑patiently, stuck in the present line.

Pun Option 2 — Shoe Pun

Down in the closet, past each sneaker and shoe,
Your gift is laced with surprises… go see what’s a‑shoe!

Pun Option 3 — Coat Pun

In the closet’s deep corner, your gift chose to hide—
It wasn’t being “coat‑y,” just looking for some pride.

Pun Option 4 — Hanger Humor

Check by the hangers, where clothes love to “hang out,”
Your gift couldn’t hanger‑ndle waiting—go help it out!

Pun Option 5 — Closet Drama

At the base of the closet, your present’s in line—
It said it would wait, but honestly? It’s closet‑rophobic by design.

Some suggestions.  All a bit harder than what AI came out with.

Looking high?  You're cold as snow  Time to take a look below.

Looking in the open air?  Try an enclosure, if you dare.

Done looking all about?  Now its time to bottom out.

In all the LLMs in all the world, Santa Closet was nowhere to be found?

You, sprout, have made my night. Those examples are all reassuringly awful.

LOL!

I thought you might appreciate their horribleness. Happy Holidays!

I won’t deny that CoPilot’s puns were fun. The same way it was fun when, after a couple of friends and I exhausted any atlas with our country-name puns on a walk across campus, one friend just went, “Cam-bode-ya, Cam-bode-ya, Cam-bode-ya.”

His futility cracked us up, I a-shoe you.

Happy holidays to you, too.

The gift was sewing lessons (with the rhyming hint leading kiddo to find the lesson information taped to a sewing machine in the bottom of their closet).

@DaveSchmidt , I should give you a writing credit. I used your pun!

The number of syllables per line are far off from each other, so it's not pleasing to the ear... but the note worked (and the family seemed to enjoy it, since it was read aloud, along with looking at the text). Here's how I finished it up:

In the corner of your room,

Bigger than just a kit.

A pedal makes it fast,

Stepping off makes you pause it.

Do you know what it is?

Or maybe it’s more “wears it?”

Not in a chimney, but hinged doors,

It’s in a Santa Clos--.

I think it is awesome that you gave sewing lessons to your kid as a gift.

It was actually my kiddo's request! They do some thrifting, and wanted to learn how to alter and embellish a few of their finds.
