Aarrggh! Help me silence my loo! (Quiet now, yay!)

It’s nearly 1am. It sounds like an army is drilling under my house, and have been since dinner. The whole house is shaking. D has been sleeping for house - he just escaped with superhero tv to drown it all out, then collapsed in sugar-loaded stupor on the bed.

I’ve tried to jiggle the refill arm-thing (it’s all I know to do), and I’ll contact the landlord in the morning, but now all I want to do is sleep - I can’t with this noise and vibration!

I have no idea where to turn water off, don’t think I’m strong enough anyway. Have no tools. HELP!

(Feeling helpless. Looked for the recent thread but couldn’t find it)

If you can open the top, there should be something that looks like a plug covering a hole attached to a chain.  Something is preventing the handle and the chain from placing that plug back in place, so the refill water tank can fill up.  Try to plug it manually for now with said plug.

(No clue about the drilling sound though)

Someone is drilling up into her bathroom to steal her loo paper.

Is that the sound that normally happens when your toilet tank is filling, Joanne?  It sounds like vibration in the pipes.

I opened it up, and it was full of water, but vibrating and whistling. The sound was travelling up from the pipes - one plumbers’ reference seemed to indicate it might be grot in an outflow valve in the tank or lower down where you turn the water off to the loo itself.
i couldn’t budge that valve external to the loo.
But I jiggled the bits inside the tank again (thank you), and all’s quiet now. So I’ll sit for a bit to calm down. Then go to bed.

YAY MOL ! big surprise

So glad you got it hushed!

Regarding the valve that controls water inflow to the tank, you may thank yourself someday for finding a way to make it easy to turn off, even if it means calling out a plumber.  They have valves that move readily and only need a 1/4 turn to close.

The worst part is disturbing our more-sleep-dependent neighbours in this complex.
Plus we’re a little limited in what we can do with fixtures and maintenance according to our lease (even calling emergency plumbers goes through the agent). But, as you say, knowing we’re not helpless and can do some basic stuff is important.

It’s vibration in pipes on refilling the tank. Tank sounds like it’s constantly trying to fill, even quiet. The vibration starts with a high-pitched whistle when you flush then full-bore hammer-knock (?). I think there’s grot or decay affecting a seal or washer on a vital (cheap) part. Now it’s late morning, after D has done some (unrelated) Uni studies, we’ll clean inside the tank and see how it goes.
