5:00 p.m. Sunday 8/22 in Millburn

So far we've gotten 4.5" or rain based on my rain gauge in the back garden. I wandered around town, mainly because I still have imprints of 9 & 10 years ago on my mind, and took some videos for reference. Henri looks like it meandered a little westward as it came north and now there are bands that are just going to come through for several more hours. This was at around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, 2021.

Rats. Videos cannot be loaded up. Bummer. It is about halfway to Irene levels.

Still cannot load videos in my JamieSpace

I was hoping you didn’t post up any images like this. Irene really did a lot of damage in millburn.

I remember that! My church is right across the street. Irene wrecked our preschool. Anyway, I was an idot that morning and was walking around and tried to cross Main Street when it looked like that.

it isn't like that yet but those outer bands of Henri look like they're going to be here all night. That joker was supposed to turn right and bother Boston, but nooooooooo.

I was just reading Max’s post, if this henri sticks around all day tomorrow, it’s gonna get scary. I love that church. And I love Taylor park. It was a disaster to see how the river just ran through the parking lot and wiped out so many businesses. There was a tree trunk stuck in the fence of the parking lot where the cycle shop was. I miss the cycle shop.

I missed that cycling shop, too. Nick was a real mensch.

Why don't you stop in at St. Stevie's some Sunday?

I remember the Millburn flood, I guess it was '72 and before the brook was widened. The flood took out the shops on Millburn Avenue from Kaisers to Mr. E's to Woolworths.

We received another 1.5" last night. I'll take another tour in a bit. Last night it was hammering rain at around 4:30.

I'd love to go back in time and hear the logic about constructing buildings literally on top of a stream.

Those buildings were constructed from late 19th to early 20th. century. Upstream had large farmland and wooded area that could absorb storm runoff.

Things don't look bad at all. The stream looks about the same.

Someone was telling me that they elected to harden the banks of the stream as it went through town after one too many clobberings like this one really messed things up. I dunno.

The first wave of building in the Millburn area used the river to power small mills, which had to be built adjacent to their power sources.  Road development followed trails that followed the valleys as travel was easier on the level flood plains.  Later development in both Millburn and Short Hills was centered around the train stations as both areas were developed as commuter suburbs.  The train line, like the roads, followed the most level ground when possible.

That’s where the name of the town comes from. A burn is a small stream.

when I was a ‘ute, Fandango paper mill was the only mill left. It was where the Millburn car wash is….. and it would catch fire once or twice a year. So as kids, we thought the town’s name made sense.
