MAPLEWOOD GLEE CLUB BRINGS “WONDERFUL” HOLIDAY HARMONY

Want to be part of North Jersey’s grandest, long-running, sweet-sounding holiday tradition? On Sunday, December 9 at 4pm, you can.

That’s when the Maplewood Glee Club will hold their annual family-friendly holiday show at St. Joseph Church in Maplewood (767 Prospect Street).

The concert – titled “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” – will feature songs about “wonder,” an audience sing-along, guest groups, classic carols with a twist, and modern favorites from The Eagles, The Beach Boys, David Bowie, and Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked”).

Performers range in age from 16 to 80, with guest appearances from Academy Voices from Newark Academy, and a set by the glee club’s newest addition, The Usual Suspects. “But,” says music director Greg Scimé, “our favorite guest performers are always the audience.”

The glee club comprises members from all over Essex and Union county, not just Maplewood, and was founded in 1946 by a group of returning WWII Veterans. “We haven’t been around as long as Taylor ham, but we’re older than Bruce Springsteen,” says Scimé.

In addition to their holiday show, the Maplewood Glee Club also throws a yearly Spring concert, at which they award a college scholarship to a local high school senior planning a career in music. “We raise money throughout the year and have met so many extraordinary students through the scholarship,” says Glee Club Treasurer Steve Adamczyk. “It’s our way of giving back to the community we love.”

As always, the holiday show promises to deliver enchanting harmony, infectious energy, and a few surprises. Ticket information can be found on the Maplewood Glee Club’s Facebook page or at www.maplewoodgleeclub.com
